Software Engineer (C++) | Defence R&D  (defence experience NOT required)
Norfolk, on-site | £35k - £55k | 4½ day week

This role is suitable for people just starting out in software, all the way up to those well established in their careers and looking to have impact on having impact on full lifecycle processes.

Want to write C++ for the team that is defining the future of technology in the defence industry? Defence experience isn't required, so if you've fancied moving into the sector, this is a strong way in.

My client designs and builds complex defence systems. Their R&D team works three to five years ahead of live programmes, figuring out what the next customer requirement will be. Small, multi-disciplined team: software, controls, electronics, physics. And they're investing in how software gets built, with more modular code, cleaner Git workflows and proper testing coming in.

The role
You'll design and build system software, front end and back end, for R&D projects. Then take it beyond the desk: integrating it on prototype equipment and analysing trials data to shape the next upgrade. Lots of variety. Plenty of maths.

What you'll do

Design and develop new software in C++, to MISRA standards
Build graphical user interfaces (Currently QT, but plans to use other technologies too)
Deploy software on Linux (Red Hat and Ubuntu) and look after the systems it runs on
Write interface software for external hardware and third-party software
Analyse trials data properly, and write it up for technical and non-technical audiences
Get hands-on with integration on prototype equipment
Keep code under control in GitWhat you'll bring

C++ strength relative to your experience
A degree in software, computer systems, maths, physics or similar
An analytical, problem-solving mindset
Comfort explaining technical work to people at all levels
Curiosity, and happy picking up new tech and methods
Willingness to travel occasionally, UK and abroadNice to have: Qt, Python/bash scripting, OpenCV, CUDA, experience on real-time or mission-critical software.

Why it's worth a look

4½ day working week
Real variety: code, maths, hardware, trials
Joining as the team modernises how it builds software, so your ideas count
Training to fill any gapsOccasional UK and international travel, with some unsocial hours at times.
