Workshop Engineer – Software & Systems

Bedford

Are you an experienced engineer who is equally comfortable working with software and systems as you are with physical equipment?

We’re recruiting for an established global technology business looking to add a Workshop Engineer to its technical operation in Bedford.

This isn’t a traditional nuts-and-bolts workshop role. The equipment you’ll work with combines electronics, software, connectivity and increasingly intelligent technology, so we’re looking for someone with a practical engineering background and strong IT/software capability.

The Role

Working predominantly from the Bedford facility, you’ll take ownership of sophisticated technical equipment before it reaches customers.

Your responsibilities will include:

Pre-staging and configuring equipment ahead of installation
Installing and updating software and firmware
Configuring equipment to customer requirements
Troubleshooting hardware and software faults
Testing, validating and completing quality checks
Diagnosing technical issues and identifying solutions
Maintaining, repairing and upgrading demonstration and loan equipment
Supporting the evaluation and testing of new products
Completing technical and configuration documentation
Working closely with field service, support and project teams
Occasional field-based technical support when required
Attending manufacturer and product training

You’ll be given plenty of autonomy and trusted to manage your workload, solve problems and ensure equipment is configured correctly and ready on time.

What We’re Looking For

You don’t need to be a programmer or software developer, but you should be confident working with modern software-driven equipment.

Experience across some of the following would be particularly relevant:

Software installation and configuration
Windows-based systems
Hardware/software troubleshooting
Networking and connectivity
Firmware and software updates
Equipment configuration
Testing and validation
Diagnostics and root-cause analysis
Electrical/electronic equipment
Technical documentationAbove all, we’re looking for someone reliable, organised, technically curious and comfortable working independently.

An HNC/BTEC Level 4 or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering would be advantageous, although strong hands-on experience will also be considered.

A full UK driving licence is required.

Your Background

We’re open-minded on industry background. Relevant experience could come from:

Digital print or imaging equipment
Electronics
IT hardware
Banking or cash-handling technology
Medical or laboratory equipment
Scientific instrumentation
AV technology
Automation
Other software-controlled capital equipmentThis could also be an excellent move for an experienced Field Service Engineer looking to come off the road while retaining the technical variety, diagnostics and problem-solving aspects of field service.

Package

Up to £35,000 salary, 10% performance bonus, enhanced employer pension contribution, private medical and life assurance, 26 days holidays plus bank holidays.

You'll also receive comprehensive product and technical training, with ongoing development opportunities.

If you enjoy figuring out how hardware, software and systems work together and want a stable, autonomous technical role with a global technology business, we’d love to hear from you
