About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic SEN Teaching Assistant with a Sports Coach background to join a supportive and inclusive school near Portsmouth. This role is ideal for someone passionate about sport, physical activity, and supporting young people with additional needs to thrive both academically and emotionally.

You will use your coaching skills to engage students, promote positive behaviour, and support learning through movement, teamwork, and structured activities. This position is particularly suited to candidates with experience in sports coaching, PE support, youth work, or mentoring who are looking to transition into education.

About the School

The school supports pupils aged 6–16 with a range of Special Educational Needs and has around 100 students. It is well known for its strong staff support, collaborative ethos, and commitment to student wellbeing. The site offers free parking and a welcoming team environment.

Key Responsibilities

Support students with SEN on a one-to-one and small group basis, using sports and physical activity as engagement tools
Assist teachers in the classroom, particularly in PE lessons and active learning sessions
Promote positive behaviour, teamwork, and emotional regulation through structured activities
Support students during break times, lunch, and physical activities
Help students build confidence, resilience, and social skills
Adapt activities to meet individual learning and physical needs
Encourage a safe, inclusive, and motivating learning environment

Ideal Candidate

Background in sports coaching, PE, youth work, or mentoring
Experience working with children or young people (school, club, or community setting)
Confident managing behaviour and motivating students through physical activity
Patient, energetic, and resilient with a positive attitude
Strong communication and teamwork skills

Qualifications

GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths
Sports coaching qualifications or relevant experience are highly desirable
SEN experience is an advantage but not essential — training provided
