The Role
We’re looking for a Residential Childcare Worker – Night Duty to join our dedicated team in Ayr.
Working as part of the night team, you’ll provide a safe, calm and supportive environment for the children and young people in our care throughout the night.
You’ll be someone who understands the importance of consistency, reassurance and creating a sense of security, particularly for children who may have experienced trauma, instability or challenging circumstances.
This is a rewarding role where your patience, compassion and understanding can make a genuine difference.
Although this is a night-duty position, the role involves much more than simply being present overnight. You’ll contribute to the overall care and wellbeing of the children, respond appropriately to their individual needs and ensure they receive the support and care they need throughout their stay.
What you’ll be doing
• Providing high-quality residential childcare and support to children and young people during night hours.
• Creating a safe, nurturing and welcoming environment where children feel secure and supported.
• Supporting children with their individual needs, including those with additional support needs.
• Responding calmly and appropriately to behaviours that may be challenging, using a child-centred and trauma-informed approach.
• Providing personal care and support where required, always maintaining the child’s dignity, privacy and independence.
• Supporting children with their bedtime and night-time routines.
• Monitoring the wellbeing and safety of children throughout the night and responding appropriately to any concerns or incidents.
• Developing positive, trusting relationships with children and young people.
• Maintaining accurate records, including daily/nightly notes, care records and incident reports.
• Communicating effectively with colleagues and ensuring important information is handed over to the wider team.
• Working in line with safeguarding procedures, care plans, risk assessments and organisational policies.
• Promoting the wellbeing, confidence and development of every child in your care.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who has relevant experience working with children or young people in a residential childcare or care setting.
You’ll ideally have experience supporting children and young people who may have additional needs, complex needs or behaviours that can be challenging. Experience within residential childcare is particularly desirable.
You’ll also bring:
• Experience of providing personal care would be advantageous, or a willingness to undertake personal care duties as part of the role.
• A warm, patient and compassionate approach.
• The ability to remain calm and reassuring when situations become challenging.
• Strong communication and observation skills.
• The ability to work confidently as part of a team and independently during night shifts.
• A good understanding of safeguarding and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries.
• A commitment to treating every child with dignity, respect and kindness.
• A genuine desire to support children and young people to feel safe, develop their confidence and thrive.
