Psychology Graduate - SEND Teaching Assistant Opportunity

Location: Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
Start Date: Immediate
Job Type: Full-time opportunity

Are you a Psychology Graduate looking to gain valuable experience working with children and young people with additional needs? Do you have a passion for understanding behaviour, supporting development and helping others reach their potential?

Simply Education is recruiting a Psychology Graduate to join a specialist school in Stoke-on-Trent. This is an excellent opportunity to put your degree knowledge into practice, develop your experience within special educational needs and make a meaningful difference to the lives of pupils who benefit from additional support.

About the School

Our client is an Ofsted-rated 'Good' specialist provision that places pupils at the heart of everything it does. The school offers a broad and varied curriculum, from Early Years Foundation Stage through to GCSEs, BTEC qualifications and Unit Award Schemes.

With a strong focus on individual interests, abilities and learning styles, the school provides a supportive, child-centred environment where pupils are encouraged to develop confidence, independence and practical skills.

As a Psychology Graduate, you will work alongside experienced teachers to support pupils through both one-to-one and small-group learning. You will help create positive learning experiences, build trusting relationships and encourage pupils to re-engage with their education.

An understanding of autism and additional needs would be beneficial, although previous experience in a specialist school is not essential. The most important qualities are patience, enthusiasm, adaptability and a genuine desire to help young people succeed.

Why Apply for This Psychology Graduate Role?

This position offers an excellent opportunity for graduates considering careers in educational psychology, teaching, child development, mental health or special educational needs.

You will gain first-hand experience of:

Supporting children and young people with autism and additional needs.

Understanding individual learning needs and approaches to behaviour.

Building positive relationships and encouraging engagement.

Supporting personalised learning in small groups and on a one-to-one basis.

Developing practical experience within a specialist education setting.

Key Responsibilities

Work alongside the class teacher to deliver personalised learning activities based on pupils' individual needs, interests and abilities.

Support pupils with vocational learning and functional skills, including English and Maths.

Encourage pupils who may have become disengaged from education to develop confidence and enjoy learning again.

Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, using shared interests to encourage communication and motivation.

Promote positive behaviour, clear boundaries and high expectations.

Adapt your approach to suit different learning styles, communication needs and individual circumstances.

Work collaboratively with teachers and other support staff to help pupils develop the skills they need for greater independence and life beyond school.

Key Requirements

The successful Psychology Graduate will demonstrate:

A degree in Psychology or a related subject.

An interest in supporting children and young people with SEND, particularly autism.

Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

Patience, resilience and a calm, positive approach.

The ability to encourage, inspire and motivate pupils.

Flexibility and a willingness to learn new skills and approaches.

The ability to work effectively as part of a team.

An interest in vocational education and supporting pupils' preparation for adulthood.

A full UK driving licence and access to your own transport would be desirable.

Previous school or SEND experience is welcome but not essential. Graduates with the right attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.
