Head of Projects (Construction)

A growing organisation within the built environment sector is seeking an experienced Head of Projects to lead a diverse portfolio of project activity. This senior role will develop, guide, and empower high-performing teams to deliver projects safely, efficiently, and to exceptional standards
The ideal candidate will combine strong operational leadership with commercial acumen, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in line with business objectives. This is an opportunity to shape long-term project strategy, build client relationships, and drive innovation across the function
Reporting into the Group Head of Estates, you'll be a relationship builder and a business winner. You'll come from a background of winning / working on small projects (you may have been the MD of your own Construction business previously). You'll split your time during the week between 2 sites (Chester & the Southwest), so you'll need to be mobile and happy to stay away at times
Role:
Lead the end-to-end delivery of the project portfolio, ensuring safety, compliance and quality at every stage
Build, coach and develop high-performing teams capable of delivering a wide range of projects
Drive commercial performance through strategic planning, forecasting, and strong financial oversight
Develop a sustainable pipeline of future project opportunities, including leading bids, proposals and presentations
Maintain high standards of governance, reporting and project controls across all workstreams
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure all projects are delivered safely, meeting statutory, technical and quality requirements
Recruit, retain and develop talent to support current delivery and future growth
Identify, scope and progress new project opportunities
Oversee all commercial and contractual commitments associated with project delivery
Deliver projects to agreed timelines, budgets and performance measures
Lead risk management activity across technical, health & safety, financial and operational domains
Build strong working relationships with internal teams, partners, and stakeholders
Manage bids, tenders and proposals, ensuring submissions are competitive and compelling
Drive revenue growth and secure new business opportunities
Provide senior-level reporting, insights and operational updates
Oversee project reviews, ensuring compliance with health & safety and project governance standards
About You (Experience & Background)
Extensive experience delivering complex projects within construction, engineering, facilities, infrastructure, or related environments.
Proven ability to lead project teams and manage senior‑level stakeholders.
Strong commercial and financial management capability, including P&L responsibility.
Be fully proficient with NEC contracts
Experience preparing, presenting and managing bids, tenders and proposals.
Track record of identifying and developing new project opportunities

Qualifications (Desired but not essential)
Degree or technical qualification in Construction, Engineering, Project Management or similar
SMSTS, CSCS and relevant health & safety certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH)
Strong literacy, numeracy and reporting capability
