About Us
Established in 2014, St Albans Basement is the UK's only chartered basement construction specialist. As a Chartered Building Company, we're bound by the Chartered Institute of Building's code of conduct, and we bring the same standard of professionalism and integrity to every project — from first enquiry through to completion. Alongside our core basement work, we also deliver a range of other high-end residential construction projects.
The Role
We're looking for an experienced, site-based Site Manager to take ownership of our residential projects from start to finish. You'll run the day-to-day programme, lead the on-site team and subcontractors, and act as the main point of contact between site, our clients, and the office-based design and management team. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who takes pride in a well-run site and won't compromise on quality.
Key Responsibilities
* Programme & site management: own the daily programme, manage the on-site workforce, and act as line manager for the site team.
* Planning & coordination: sequence trades, forecast materials, plant and labour, and adjust the short-term programme as needed.
* Quality control: inspect work daily, ensure it complies with current drawings, specifications and Building Regulations, and maintain a defect list through to close-out.
* Subcontractor management: set expectations before work starts, evaluate performance, and stop or correct any work that doesn't meet our standards.
* Health & safety: ensure health, safety and quality are managed effectively across every site.
* Reporting: provide daily and weekly progress updates to the Director and wider management team, and flag risks, delays and design queries early.
* Procurement: order materials and manage suppliers in a timely, efficient manner.
* Client & professional liaison: work directly with clients, Surveyors, Architects and Engineers to ensure plans are followed and expectations are managed.
* Variations: identify changes to scope early and refer all contract variations to the Director.
* Design support: flag build issues to the design team during the planning phase.
What We're Looking For
* 5+ years' on-site experience, including a proven track record managing multiple site operatives and subcontractors.
* Experience on basement and/or high-end design-and-build residential projects.
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
* Computer literate, including Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project.
* Strong leadership, organisation and client-facing communication skills.
* Full, clean UK driving licence, and happy to travel across Hertfordshire and London.
* Relevant site safety certification (e.g. CSCS card, SMSTS/SSSTS) — please confirm current certification when applying.
What We Offer
* £230 - £250 per day subject to experience
* Company Van
* A permanent, full-time role with a specialist, chartered company recognised as a leader in its field.
* Monday to Friday working — no routine weekend work.
* Direct support and clear reporting lines to the Director and management team, rather than being left to run sites in isolation.
* The opportunity to work on technically interesting, high-specification residential projects.
Ability to commute/relocate:
* Expected travel to London, Herts, Beds and Cambridgeshire
Education:
* GCSE or equivalent (preferred)
Experience:
* Construction management: 5 years (preferred)
Licence/Certification:
* Driving Licence (required)
