Job Description - Caretaker

To provide a safe, clean, secure, and welcoming environment for all worshippers, visitors, staff, volunteers, and community groups using the building premises. The building Caretaker will be responsible for the day-to-day care, maintenance, security, and presentation of the buildings, grounds, and associated facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Building Security

Unlock and secure the buildings as required.
Carry out regular security checks of all building premises.
Respond appropriately to alarm activations and emergencies.
Ensure all doors, windows, and access points are secured when buildings are unattended.
Monitor and report any security concerns or incidents.

Cleaning and Housekeeping

Maintain high standards of cleanliness throughout the building, halls, offices, kitchens, toilets, and other facilities.
Carry out routine cleaning duties, including vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and waste disposal.
Ensure washrooms and communal areas are regularly cleaned and adequately stocked.
Prepare rooms and spaces for worship services, meetings, weddings, funerals, and community events.

Maintenance

Conduct routine inspections of the buildings and grounds.
Undertake minor repairs and maintenance tasks where appropriate.
Identify and report maintenance issues requiring specialist contractors.
Liaise with approved contractors and assist with access arrangements.
Monitor heating, lighting, and other building systems to ensure effective operation.

Grounds Maintenance

Maintain the grounds, pathways, car parks, and external areas.
Perform basic gardening duties, including litter picking and keeping outdoor areas tidy.
Ensure pathways and entrances remain safe and accessible.
Assist with winter weather preparations, including gritting when necessary.
Liase with contractors.

Event Support

Set up and clear away furniture and equipment for church services and events.
Support weddings, baptisms, funerals, concerts, and community activities as required.
Assist users of church facilities and provide a welcoming presence on-site.

Health and Safety

Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and church policies.
Carry out regular health and safety checks.
Maintain records as required.
Report accidents, hazards, defects, and incidents promptly.
Assist with fire safety procedures and emergency evacuations.
