We're looking for an experienced Windows C++ Software Engineer for a contract role on a mature Windows desktop application used in scientific instrumentation. You'll work on both new features and day-to-day maintenance, alongside UX designers and applications specialists.

Debugging existing code is a core part of the job, not a side task. From day one you'll need to investigate issues raised from the field and in-house, including:

* Opening and analysing Windows crash dumps

* Matching PDB symbol files to the correct build

* Using Visual Studio and/or WinDbg to read call stacks and find the failing code

* Diagnosing problems such as access violations, memory leaks, version or DLL mismatches, and threading or deadlock issues

* Fixing the root cause and verifying the fix in a large legacy codebase

You'll also build and maintain features in C++/MFC, with some C#/.NET where needed.

The contract has been determined as inside IR35 and offers a day rate of £550 p/day on an initial 6 month contract with potential to extend.

What you'll need - C++ Software Engineer

* Strong recent C++ on Windows (10+ years ideal)

* Hands-on MFC experience

* Recent, practical experience debugging Windows applications with crash dumps and PDBs (Visual Studio and/or WinDbg)

* Comfortable working in a large existing codebase, not only greenfield work

Desirable Experience - C++ Software Engineer

* MVVM

* C# / .NET

* Azure DevOps and Git

* Familiarity with Agile ways of working

* Hardware control or instrument software

* Image processing

Location

Cambridge, with part-remote working.

If you enjoy digging into hard Windows bugs as much as shipping new features, this will be a good fit.
